Refract Community Center
“A place to go, something to do”.
PURPOSE: Current teen centers’ main problem is lack of attendance. Teenagers tend to see the typical teen center’s main goal as containment. At Refract, the roles are reversed. Teenagers will now be the ones in control. Teenagers are now the managers, directors, cooks, DJs, teachers and coaches. This is not just a teen center, but a community center as well. Through the trust given to them, adolescents create a sense of self worth by contributing to their community, and community members of all ages are exposed to the wealth of knowledge and skills they can learn from a younger generation. Whether it be a 15 year old girl teaching a 67 year old man how to use Photoshop, or a 14 year old boy training a 6 year old girl to become a star basketball player, everyone in the community benefits. The purpose of the center is to counsel, entertain, contribute, promote a healthy lifestyle, and educate. It is a public space teens can truly call their own.
CONCEPT:”Refraction” – change in the direction of a wave due to a change in its mediumrnrnThe teen center is the catalyst to the teenagers’ ego lenses. Although the center does not control the experiences and psyche the teen has when he or she enters as an adolescent (the angle of incidence), it does have an effect on how they emerge into adulthood (the angle of refraction).rnrnThis concept is driven from the adolescent psyche, and reflected throughout the design.
