La Biblioteca di Vicenza
The current design proposal focuses on the idea of creating a cultural center/library, which will be a spacernopen to a variety of activities and events related to culture, arts, design, science and more. This space is going to be like a ‘hub’ of knowledge and creativity.
The architectural/design intentions of this project are to create an environment in which ideas and creation flourish along with the informative and educational character of such a space, through specifically designed infrastructure, rnequipment and variety of settings, which will trigger such activities and initiatives.
In terms of architectural concepts, the design proposal aims to balance between the old and the new. This will be achieved by keeping and incorporating in the design an old ruined wall that is present in the site deligated for this project. This element became the starting point of the design process. The ruined and old element is present throughout the city of Vincenza in Italy, as well as in the site location which is a parking space called Fogazzaro, one of the biggest and closest to the city parking areas.
Therefore a certain language is evident and still present in the fabric of the city to a great extent. Vinceza is the city of Palladio, therefore the element of symmetry was the main concept that informed the design process and determined the final outcome. Symmetry and the coexistance of the old and the new by incorporating the old wall of the site location in the design process, aims at preserving and amplifying this language with respect to the historic and cultural legacy; the symbolism it expresses and carries and end up to a final outcome that complements and reinforces this culturalde legacy expressed both in uses and design.
Concerning the site and its characteristics, the main aspects ofrninterest include the Bacchiglione River that passes by the site and a bridge, which connects the two sides of thernriver. One side is mostly occupied by commercial spaces and the other is residential.
